About this Event
With clothes designed to fall apart and be replaced, learning how to mend your favorite garments keeps them out of the landfills longer while saving you money. You’ll learn the basics of mending, both on woven and knit fabric, by hand stitching or by machine. Hand sewing experience is helpful, but not required. You are encouraged to bring your own item of clothing in need of repair, but fabric for mending samples is provided.
About the instructors:
Dan Toomre is a textile artist from Redmond, Washington, who got his degree in Textiles and Fashion from Maine College of Art and Design. He's now pursuing his teaching degree, also from MECA&D. He creates functional pieces intended to be frequently used and loved, and delights in teaching others textile-related skills. Dan specializes in embroidery, mending, and quilting, and sews much of his own clothing. He believes that having the power to make and customize your own possessions is invaluable.
Michelle Kruegar, originally from Massachusetts, has lived in Maine since 2015. She studied Fashion Design in high school, and has a degree in Retail Fashion from Becker College. While working in the medical and retail industries, she maintained sewing and crocheting as both a hobby and a part-time business. Michelle continually improves her skills by challenging herself with new patterns and projects. After making her daughter’s wedding dress, she wants to expand into formal wear and costuming, including both clothing and accessories.
