About this Event

Close Encounters on the 34th Kind: A Documentary Screening & Conversation

Join us at Montclair State University for a special screening of Close Encounters on the 34th Kind, an exciting documentary exploring how streets, transportation, and public space shape our daily lives and communities. It IS inspiring, and we’re happy to have it kick off SUB/URBAN REVIEWS’ Bloomfield Avenue is a Commons initiative.
The documentary features the work and perspective of Clarence Eckerson Jr., founder of Streetfilms and one of the world's most influential storytellers on transportation, cities, and public space. For more than two decades, Eckerson has documented innovative streets, transit systems, and public spaces worldwide, helping audiences understand how community design affects safety, mobility, health, economic opportunity, and quality of life.Following the screening, Eckerson will join local leaders and advocates for a conversation about what these ideas mean for New Jersey.
Panelists will represent organizations including Bike JC, ROUTE, NJ Transit, Bloomfield Urbanist Society, Transit Newark, VELO Bloomfield, Montclair Bike Walk, Hudson Complete Streets, immigrant rights groups, Stronger Montclair, and other community stakeholders working to create safer, more accessible, and more vibrant public spaces.Whether you're interested in transportation, community development, public policy, civic engagement, or simply curious about how our streets shape everyday life, this event offers a chance to engage in one of the most important public conversations facing New Jersey
today.

This event is presented as part of Bloomfield Avenue Is a Commons, a project by SUB/URBAN REVIEW. Bloomfield Avenue Is a Commons reimagines the Avenue as shared civic infrastructure that connects not only cities & towns, urban & suburban, but people. Using public discourse, in-person events, storytelling, art, and analysis, we explore how streets can function as places for connection and democratic life.
Come for the film. Stay for the conversation. Leave with a new way of seeing the places we inhabit every day
