Climate Justice and Militarism: How the War Machinery Fuels Climate Change, Oppression, and Inequality

đź—“ Thursday, 14 November, 7:30-9:30 PM
đź“Ť Community Base, 113 Queens Road, Brighton BN1 3XG

Speakers:

  • Kirsten Bayer, Campaign Against Arms Trade
  • Sanjana Karimuri and Kiri Ley, Green New Deal Rising (GNDR) activists
  • Elaine Graham-Leigh, Environmental campaigner
  • Damian McCarthy, Chair Unite the Union, Brighton and surrounds

Carbon emissions from the first 120 days of the war on Gaza surpassed the annual emissions of 26 individual countries. It's a stark reminder of how the arms trade and militarism not only fuel war but also drive the climate crisis and worsen it. Militarism consumes vast amounts of resources, generates enormous quantities of toxic waste, and causes lasting environmental destruction.

Military spending around the world is at an all-time high, including in the UK, where Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP. Meanwhile, the pledges to tackle climate change and reduce carbon emissions are minimal in comparison.

Join us for a crucial discussion on how militarism fuels the climate crisis and the devastating impact it has on our communities. Our panel of activists and campaigners will explore the environmental destruction caused by war, the vast resources wasted on military spending, and the need to redirect these resources to fight climate change. We will also discuss the Global Green New Deal and how we can transition from an economy built on war to one built on peace and justice.

Key topics will include:

  • How the arms trade and militarism fuel the climate crisis.
  • Military spending vs. climate action investment.
  • The impact of climate change on our communities.
  • How to transition from an economy based on war to one rooted in peace and justice.

Let’s unite to demand climate justice and peace, not war and destruction. No to war, yes to climate justice!
