Sunday, June 30th 10-11:30 a.m. you are invited to Climate Change Sunday. Special guest Tad DeLay, author of Future of Denial: The Ideologies of Climate Change, will speak from his new book.
This special secular Sunday (no hymns, no prayers, just real and authentic content and conversation) is part of a continuing series, “Church Done Otherwise.” Everyone from all walks of life is welcome to join the lecture, discussion, and idea-sharing focused specifically on overcoming the denial of climate change. Yes, it’s Sunday morning, but no, it won’t be religious, other than exemplifying that solidarity with a planet in peril is a profoundly important responsibility of being human in 2024.
Tad DeLay’s unique life experience will intrigue almost anyone. He previously served as an evangelical pastor in Arkansas. Terminated from his employment when his religious views shifted toward LGBTQIA+ inclusion, he left the church (and theism) but has remained “church adjacent,” having written popular books like Against: What Does The Evangelical Want?, The Cynic and the Fool: The Unconscious In Theology & Politics, and God is Unconscious: Psychoanalysis and Theology. Interested in the intersections of environmental humanities, critical theory, psychoanalysis, continental philosophy, and religion, DeLay will host a lively conversation at the intersection of matters of utmost importance.
For those who remember our Speculative Sunday visitor of 2023, Victoria Goddard, you can be happy to know we’re continuing the speculative fiction trend in this way: DeLay is a friend of best-selling sci-fi novelist China Miéville, who says of Tad’s newest book: “Tad DeLay is one of the most important and disquieting theorists of consciousness and politics writing today. His work is indispensable.”
