Cleveland Chamber Collective Announces Free Concert in Cleveland HeightsCLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH — The Cleveland Chamber Collective is pleased to announce its next free concert at Disciples Christian Church, taking place on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.
The program, built around the theme of discovery, explores how music can shift our perspectives and reveal unexpected connections. Each piece on the program invites audiences to experience sound as an experiment in perception and possibility.
The concert opens with Caroline Shaw’s Thousandth Orange, a work inspired by still-life paintings. Pianist Eric Charnofsky presents a simple, luminous cadential pattern, while a string trio—Emily Cornelius, violin; Brian Slawta, viola; and Jeff Singler, cello—orbits and reshapes the musical idea, uncovering new perspectives along the way.
Next, violist Brian Slawta performs Ellen Ruth Harrison’s Solitude II, a solo work that explores shifting colors, textures, and registers. Harrison reflects on the duality of solitude versus loneliness, drawing on Eric Nelson’s words: “It’s solitude if you like it. Loneliness if you don’t.”
The program continues with John Adams’s Road Movies (1995), performed by Emily Cornelius, violin, and Eric Charnofsky, piano. Marking a departure from Adams’s orchestral sound, this three-movement duo balances rhythmic drive and lyrical meditation before concluding with a vigorous, high-energy finale. Adams himself encouraged listeners to simply “relax, and leave the driving to us.”
Linthicum Blackhorse’s Wamákȟaškaŋ (Animal Kingdom), performed by Linda White, bass flute, creates a reflective and spiritual soundscape. Over a foundation of natural sounds, White offers musical prayers to the four directions of the compass, weaving in improvisations of animal sounds as a tribute to Lakota traditions.
Local composer Ty Alan Emerson contributes Discoveries, an exploration of the rarely heard waterphone. Drawing on recordings of the instrument’s unique effects, Emerson constructs a delicate and surprising sonic landscape that balances fragility with moments of unexpected familiarity.
The program concludes with Mixed Doubles by Eric Charnofsky, a lively work for flute (Linda White), clarinet (Alix Reinhardt), cello (Jeff Singler), percussion (Dylan Moffitt), and piano (the composer). The piece begins with a jazz-inflected introduction, then unfolds as a series of inventive duos, each framed by a recurring ritornello that returns to bring the journey full circle.
The Cleveland Chamber Collective invites the community to join them for this free concert on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Disciples Christian Church in Cleveland Heights. The afternoon promises to be a colorful, eclectic, and inspiring musical adventure.
