Looking to take your wheel-throwing skills to the next level? This two-week course is designed for those with prior experience in wheel throwing who want to learn how to make lids and handles, and knob attachments for your wheel thrown pots. This two-session class is perfect for building skills beyond the basics of wheel throwing giving your work a cohesive and polished look!
MAIN TOPICS COVERED:
· SESSION 1: Guided by experienced instructor Jeff Turner, you'll get hands-on practice making a pot and a matching lid. Learn to use calipers and tips/tricks for making various types of lids. The instructor will demonstrate throwing a pot with a gallery and flanged lid. Other lid types will be demonstrated as your project demands.
· SESSION 2: Once your pieces reach the leather-hard stage, you'll trim your pot and lid for a perfect fit and throw a handle or knob right on the lid. We will also work on making handles using multiple techniques including pulling them the traditional way and demonstrating other ways to make stylish handles without pulling them.
Important:
Clay is provided, but you will need to bring your own tools.
Please note that this class is for intermediate level students who are already familiar with the fundamentals of Wheel Throwing. A successful student for this class should be able to consistently throw a cylinder without struggling. This course is for Clay Studio Members Only.
Instructor Bio:
Jeff Turner is a Texas native and a graduate of Flour Bluff High School, received a bachelor’s degree in geology from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and a master’s degree in geology from from Baylor University. While filing out his degree plan he discovered that a fine arts course was required to graduate and that’s where Jeff discovered his passion for ceramics. One class turned to several more and into a summer job before graduate school turning out pots for school funds. Life put a hold on ceramics for nearly 30 years and a career change brought him back to experiencing clay again. Jeff mostly produces functional ceramics on the wheel but is constantly exploring ways to push wheel throwing in whimsical and unexpected directions usually reserved for hand building or fusing thrown and hand building techniques. Jeff is a two time winner of Best of Show at the Art Center Ceramics Show and teaches both wheel and hand building classes at the Art Center Corpus Christi.
*Please Note that the Art Center does not offer class exchanges. Refunds are only provided if the Art Center Cancels the class.*
