CivicLAB X RSA: Creating Community Hubs - Centres of Care

This event will bring together University of Derby staff and RSA Fellows from across the country to share insights and facilitate cross-pollination between a range of different fields and disciplines, including civic action and placemaking.

The talks will explore the idea that local civic action can leave a national – if not international – impact by creating meaningful change at a grassroots level and setting a precedent of best practice that can be replicated globally.

Speakers include:

Dr Rhiannon Jones (FRSA) - Associate Professor (Civic Practice) and Head of Civic at the University of Derby. She leads CivicLAB, an Institution-wide centre on participatory culture, creative dialogue, and civic practice. She is Chair of the International Contemporary Working Art Group for Cumulus.

Roy Leighton - RSA fellow and founding director of Undiscovered Country will explore how to create a culture of restorative peace and dialogue through the arts. Focusing on his latest play ‘The Missing Peace’, which addresses the issues of conflict and othering in society and ‘The Creative Place’ project on the market square in Northampton. He'll be joined by Becky Carrier, the CEO of the Northampton Film Festival and director of the ‘The Creative Place’ community engagement and Eleanor West, neurodivergent creator, activist, coach and actor.

Samantha Rushton – Community Producer at Derby Theatre leading on DT communities, Derby Theatre’s community program giving a voice to local people in Derby platforming arts, development & culture important to local communities. Sam has previously worked as the producer for Derby CAN and previously been part of an EU funded international research project with Staffordshire University, Warsaw University and Kaunas University around community arts and cultural animation.
