CIRC Middle School presents: Reimagining Middle School Spaces

Reflecting on a Reggio-Inspired Environments for Adolescent Learners, here Architecture and Interior Design meets Education.
About this Event

This session explores the core principles of Reggio Emilia philosophy with a focus on how architecture and design shape learning environments in middle school settings. Framed by the Reggio concept of the environment as the "third teacher," we will examine how thoughtfully designed spaces can inspire curiosity, foster independence, and deepen relationships between students, educators, and the wider community.

Participants will engage with the following Reggio Big Ideas:

• Environment: How the physical space communicates values, supports agency, and invites exploration.
  
• Materials: The role of diverse, open-ended, and natural materials in provoking thinking and expression.
  
• Design & Architecture: The aesthetics, flow, and functionality of space as integral to pedagogy.
  
• Intentionality: How every design decision—from lighting and layout to display and organization—is purposefully made to support student learning and well-being.
  

Through collaborative reflection, case studies, and visual provocations, we will also consider the unique opportunities and challenges of applying these concepts at the middle school level, where developmental needs evolve and deepen.
