Celebrating the release of Cinematographe’s new 4K edition of this Neil Jordan remake, we’re excited for the Brattle debut of WE’RE NO ANGELS (1989). David Mamet’s script transposes the action from 19th century South America to Depression-era Upstate New York as two convicts escape during a moment of chaos. Penn and De Niro play the escapees and their significant—if often overlooked at the time—comedic chops are put to excellent use as they end up trapped posing as visiting priests at a monastery while the authorities search for a vicious killer who has also escaped.
