About this Event

CineRoma 2.0 : Letter of Forgiveness + O Baripen

Join us for CineRoma 2.0,  the UK’s first Roma Film Festival, now in its second year. Brought to you by Offline (formerly Glasgow Artists’ Moving Image Studios | GAMIS) and Romano Lav, a community-based organisation working with Roma communities in Govanhill, Glasgow. CineRoma aims to present diverse films by and with Roma people, exploring self-perception, identity, history and systems of power.

The festival programme has been co-curated in collaboration with a cohort of Roma Young People from Govanhill through a series of workshops organised by Offline and Romano Lav.

Letter of Forgiveness

Bilet de iertare

Alina Serban

Romania, 2020

Romanian with English Subtitles

15”

In the household of a wealthy Romanian noblewoman in 1855, Maria, a Roma-Gipsy slave, fights to obtain freedom for her son Dinca. Part of a future full-length project, the short film presents a day in the household in which Maria and her son, Dinca, serve as slaves. As important guests arrive for dinner and all the slaves are making preparations, Maria and her son see this day as a chance to take a step to change their fate. During slavery time, up until 1856, the Romanian equivalent of the word "forgiveness" was used when referring to freeing someone from slavery (the enslaved person was "forgiven" from slavery).

O Baripen

O Baripen - Odkaz Eleny Lackovej

Vera Lacková

Slovakia, Czechia, 2023

Romany, Slovak, Czech with English Subtitles

52”

Parallels between two family women who despite social prejudice dedicate their lives to artistic creation. This biographical film charts the fate of Roma writer Elena Lackova in an intimate and personal way. As viewers, thanks to the author's authentic voiceover and preserved archive footage, we immerse ourselves in their memories of the time of the Holocaust and the Communist dictatorship in the context of the play Horiaci cigánsky tábor (A Burning Gypsy Camp). Revealing the realities of growing up in a Roma settlement, her first literary achievements and her efforts to combine personal and professional life. We also get to know her life story through her great-granddaughter, the actress Alžbeta Ferencovová. The parallel between the life of the writer and her great-granddaughter, who also embarked on an artistic career and shatters stereotypes about the role of Romani women in society, creates a current and relatable story.
