Amy Heckerling’s 1995 film Clueless is a cult classic. The film’s use of slang, fashion, and music rippled across the ’90s, thrilling fans then and now. The film is the story of Beverly Hills socialite Cher (Alicia Silverstone) who sweetly navigates the pleasures and pitfalls of adolescence, trying to do good for those around her, and finding herself along the way. While Clueless is an adaptation of the 1815 Jane Austen novel Emma, the Los Angeles world of the film looks nothing like the landscapes inhabited by the eponymous British heroine. Instead, Heckerling’s film is one grounded in Valley Girl vernacular, mall culture, and playful postmodern pastiche.
In this seminar, we will explore how Heckerling produced this sweet depiction of teenage life and why this surprising film became such a meaningful cultural touchstone. We’ll study the way adaptations operate and explore why Austen adaptations became so popular in the 1990s. We will consider the contribution of this film to the teen film genre, considering the role clothing and soundtracks play in such coming-of-age comedies. Finally, “AS IF” we wouldn’t, we’ll take seriously the fan culture surrounding Clueless, grappling with how and why this seemingly frivolous film achieved cult status.
