Cinder Well and Drowse at The Unknown!
Cinder Well is the musical project of California-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Amelia Baker. Characterized by her singular vocals, Baker's compositions chart a sonic journey through cinematic soundscapes, weaving surrealistic lyricism with stylistic elements inspired by traditional music, ballads and doom metal. There is weight and resonance to this music, heavy in ways which do not rely on distortion but by the depth of the lyricism and expansive arrangements instead. Cinder Well’s most recent album, ‘Cadence’ was released in 2023.Cinder Well has performed an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and shared the stage with a wide variety of artists including Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter, Lankum, and has performed at festivals including Other Voices, End of the Road, Prepare the Ground and Amplifest.
Drowse is the self-recording and songwriting project of Pacific Northwest based multidisciplinary artist Kyle Bates. The project’s prismatic sound reflects slowcore, ambient, folk, experimental electronic, noise-pop, black metal and more through Bates’s distinct song-worlds. Live, these ornate sounds are accompanied by the artist’s “incredibly lush and dreamy” video work. On most recent album Wane into It, Bates’s songwriting and production have never been more lucid; sounds flicker as he sings with fragile intensity. The record, Drowse’s third for vaunted dark music label The Flenser (Midwife, Chat Pile, Ragana), impressionistically distills loss, distance, mystery, prescription drugs, the preservation of memory via recording, and ambient anxiety through its titular act: to Wane into It, to disappear awaiting the next moon phase, water returning to sea before reemerging as a wave. “Blending slowcore, ambient, and folk with lo-fi musings on memory and entropy, Portland, Oregon musician Kyle Bates joins a grand tradition of Pacific Northwestern gloom.” -Pitchfork “Roots gnarl themselves into and around the music of Drowse, rotting as they break the surface” -NPR “Bates makes tingly, atmospheric, deeply sad indie rock.” -Stereogum
