O Cinema's Awake & Aware Series Continues!
EVENT SCHEDULE:
11 AM: Doors + Brunch Served
11:45 AM: Guest Speaker
12 PM: Film Starts
1:45 PM: Post-Film Discussion + Message from Alberto Sciamma!
Eight-year-old Santa frees her mother from the hands of an abusive father. Infused with the powers of a goldfish she swallowed whole, she sets off on a fantastical road trip toward a heaven in the sky she believes is as real as the ground beneath her. On her journey through the otherworldly Bolivian Altiplano, Santa tests the faith of a priest, befriends a troupe of cholita wrestlers, and clashes with a burnt-out cop grieving the death of his wife. Eyes firmly on the horizon, she leaves a trail of miracles in her wake and prompts her unlikely followers to question everything they believed was possible.
Shot against the otherworldly landscapes of the Bolivian highlands, Alberto Sciamma's CIELO moves between grim reality and pure fable without ever losing its footing, funny and unsettling and strangely tender all at once. It's the masterpiece of a filmmaker who spent thirty years chasing eccentric premises without quite landing one, until now.
VIRTUAL APPEARANCE FROM DIRECTOR ALBERTO SCIAMMA!
SCREENING IN COLLABORATION WITH AMIGOS BOLIVIANOS & COMITE BOLIVIANO MIAMI
Amigos Bolivianos is a grassroots community dedicated to connecting Bolivians across South Florida and beyond. Through our network of over 700 WhatsApp members, we help ensure that no Bolivian feels alone while living away from home. We organize cultural events, share resources, promote local businesses, and create opportunities for our community to connect, celebrate our traditions, and support one another.
Comité Boliviano Miami is a volunteer-led organization committed to preserving and promoting Bolivian culture through community events, civic engagement, and cultural celebrations. We are fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers and respected community members who generously give their time to support our Bolivian community. Several of these individuals will also be attending this event and are excited to contribute and help make it a success.
BRUNCH: SALTEÑAS BOLIVIAN KITCHEN
A traditional Bolivian baked pastry with a crispy, golden crust and a savory, juicy filling. Made with potatoes, peas, caramelized onions and raisins. A perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors in every bite.
(Brunch will be vegetarian-friendly).
