Members - please join us as we celebrate another successful year. CIC-Saskatoon hosts its Annual Branch Meeting of members at Amigos this year.
Join us as we examine the past year - what were our victories, and where did we fall short? - as we celebrate the 92nd year of the Saskatoon branch.
This event is your best opportunity to have your voice heard.
This is your opportunity to vote on the executive leadership to carry us forward into the 2024-25 CIC year.
After a brief break from the meeting, join us for an outstanding presentation from Alex Camilo Duran Montano entitled "Latin America and the "authoritarian spell": El Salvador, strongmen, and the (re)-emergence of security societies".
We hope you can join us!
********
About "Latin America and the "authoritarian spell": El Salvador, strongmen, and the (re)-emergence of security societies".
This presentation aims to explain the growing appeal of authoritarian political projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, which are predicated on a revisionism of historical atrocities, repressive policing, and the erosion of democratic values. Drawing from his master's thesis, Nayib Bukele and El Salvador serve as a test case. The presentation intends to foster discussion around the broader implications of this alarming trend for countries which purportedly strive to uphold the rules-based international order (like Canada), and challenge the perception that Latin America is marginal or irrelevant in global affairs.
About our speaker:
Alex Camilo Duran Montano is a Master of Arts in Political Studies Candidate at the University of Saskatchewan. Originally from Bogotá (Colombia), Alex's research is primarily focused on security sector reform (SSR), development and political transitions in Latin America and the Caribbean. During an eight-year career in public policy, academia and international development, Alex has developed a strong commitment to understand how armed forces and civilian authorities must safeguard civil liberties, human rights, and democratic governance. When "off the clock", Alex vigorously enjoys classical music, soccer, and walks by River Landing.
Not a member? Come at 6:30 for meet and greet and the amazing presentation.
Are you a CIC member? Come for 5:00 PM and participate in the ABM, the networking and the presentation.
