Seismic Design Made Clear: AS1170.4, NCC requirements & practical guidance for better building outcomes.
About this Event

Join CIBSE VIC for an in-depth technical session exploring the seismic design requirements for building services and non-structural elements in accordance with AS1170.4 and the National Construction Code (NCC).

As industry expectations and regulatory requirements continue to evolve, understanding how to correctly interpret and apply these standards has never been more important. This session takes a practical and insightful approach to seismic design, unpacking the requirements for building services and architectural elements while addressing some of the most misunderstood and costly aspects of compliance.

Presented by Jordan Bartlett, Resilience Planner at Proactive Design, this session draws on extensive experience in resilience planning and post-disaster functionality of critical infrastructure. Jordan specialises in translating complex operational requirements into practical resilience measures for natural hazard events. He advises government agencies, engineers, architects, and project delivery teams across Australia and New Zealand, supporting the development of safer and more resilient built environments. Jordan is also actively involved in shaping industry knowledge and best practice through contributions to standards, technical societies, and professional conferences.

From exemptions and documentation challenges to serviceability and ultimate limit states, attendees will gain clarity on the real-world implications of seismic design decisions.

The discussion will also examine common industry shortfalls, defects, and legal risks, alongside the critical role of post-disaster functionality for Importance Level 4 (IL4) facilities.

Whether you are an engineer, consultant, contractor, designer, or project stakeholder, this event offers valuable guidance to support clearer interpretation, more consistent application, and stronger project outcomes across Australia.

This event provides 2 hours of CIBSE CPD.

CIBSE VIC also extends its sincere thanks to Aurecon for generously hosting this technical session and supporting continued professional learning within the industry.

Key Topics Include:

• Seismic requirements for building services and architectural elements
• Exemptions — understanding the risks and avoiding costly mistakes
• Serviceability and Ultimate Limit States
• Documentation challenges and industry knowledge gaps
• Common shortfalls, defects, and legal implications
