Overview

The Comprehensible Midwest Conference empowers teachers to create joyful, personalized, effective and equitable language acquisition through instruction based on comprehensible input. As a collaborative community, we safely support teachers to connect with each other and to teach in ways that respond to students' cultural and linguistic identities. Every year we bring in some of the nation’s foremost trainers in teaching with comprehensible input while simultaneously lifting up and supporting the voices of local and regional teachers who are striving to make their language instruction more personalized, inclusive and equitable.

Target Audience

Any teacher of a world language, regardless of context, who wishes to increase engagement, joy and effectiveness of their teaching environment will benefit from attending Comprehensible Midwest. If you believe that each of your students can acquire language and want to learn how to increase retention over time and overall achievement, developing real and measurable fluency, then this conference is for you.

Keynote Speaker:Adriana Ramirez, Vancouver, British Columbia

"The language that we inhabit gives us our place of belonging. The language that we inhabit gives us our memories. We have memories of our lands and ancestors. When we write, we write from those memories and from that belonging, and that gives our stories an authenticity that is impossible to match."

Adriana Ramirez is a Spanish teacher, author, teacher trainer, presenter and curriculum consultant. She shares her knowledge and experience of more than 20 years in the classroom by constantly training other teachers on how to teach with Comprehensible Input methodologies, and how to incorporate anti-bias and anti-racist work into the language classroom. Adriana has trained and worked with teachers in Canada, the United States and Europe.

Originally from Colombia, Adriana actively works to reclaim the stories and narratives that are part of her roots and heritage. She is a huge advocate of the #OwnVoices movement and believes strongly that those who come from traditionally oppressed and colonized countries and territories must reclaim their right to tell their own stories and build their own narratives.

Adriana holds a double major in Psychology, a degree in Clinical Psychology and a Masters in Education.
