CHURCH Improvisation Sessions returns to Mirrorball Ministries to celebrate the end of the year.CHURCH Improvisation Sessions began as a weekly residency at The Bearded Lady in 2016 every Sunday bringing together the best of Brisbanes musical talent in one-off collectives to perform entirely improvised jams.
At the very first jam held at the Bearded Lady, CHURCH hosted Frank Ferrer drummer of the Guns and Roses who was on tour at the time, serendipitously captured by CHURCH’s videographer - Thea Schroder ( Silent Haitch ).
Throughout its existence CHURCH has hosted numerous international, interstate and local artists bringing Afrobeat, R&B, Funk and Neo-Soul stylings to the fore. Superstar vocalists and MC’s channeling the divinity of on the spot lyrical mastery. No two gigs were ever the same.
In 2018 - CHURCH moved its residency to Rumpus Room, collecting donations and offering a holy communion where revellers would be anointed into the musical family of radical inclusivity and dance floor joyousness.
CHURCH wasn’t satisfied with its evangelism maintained within any 4 walls and took its music to Jungle Love Festivals, Earth Frequency, Yonder and Brisbane Street Art Festival where they hosted 4 hour graveyard sets well into the early hours of the morning.
Upon expanding its reach, CHURCH hosted community jams in Bunyapa Park and Jagera Hall in West End. All with the aim to bring world class music to the people.
When COVID hit, the group diversified and returned to Rumpus when doors to venues opened again and dancing was returned to the people, honouring the music of Nirvana - performing the complete live album of Nirvana’s MTV’s Unplugged, a selection of Prince’s hits.
At Jagera Hall a collaborative gig was carefully curated with the House of Alexander, Hooplaclique, and Beauty and the Beats and CHURCH hosting the event with 90’s RnB anthems. It was a homage and offering to brown excellence in the Brisbane’s diasporic community.
When Rumpus Room closed in 2021 so did CHURCH and has since then remained on the shelf.
So, here we are back close to where it all started : 50 metres down the road in West End again, CHURCH returns with an incredible line up to open up this incredible new venue.
So please consider this a formal invitation to all the incredible musicians of Brisbanes best to come jam with us and give this space the starting it deserves.
We honour the Jagera and Turrbal people as the Traditional custodians on the land and waterways and stand in solidarity on unceded land.
