Upcoming: Chula Vista South Bay Sail — April 24–26, 2026(Extended weekend: arrive early Thursday, depart late Monday if you wish)
All Potter Yachters and friends are invited to join us for a spring sail at Safe Harbor Bayfront Marina (formerly Chula Vista Marina), located in South San Diego Bay. This location offers something for everyone—spirited sailing, relaxed cruising, or simply enjoying good company dockside.
Last year’s South Bay Sail saw a great turnout and a terrific time, even though the weather wasn’t quite the Southern California best we had hoped for. Despite that, the sailing, socializing, and dockside gatherings made it a memorable event. Requests have already been submitted for sunshine and just the right amount of wind this year.
The Chula Vista South Bay is known for its reliable winds and excellent sailing. Participants may sail locally, head north into San Diego Bay with sweeping views of downtown, or venture toward the ocean if conditions allow. Those who prefer a slower pace will find Safe Harbor Bayfront to be a comfortable and scenic marina with easy access to shore-side activities.
We will have access to the marina clubhouse and BBQ areas, and the on-site Galley Restaurant is well known for its excellent food and drinks. The launch ramp is free, and arrangements have been made for on-site trailer and vehicle parking at the marina. The ramp is within walking distance and includes a finger dock, making launching and retrieval straightforward.
In addition to sailing, there are several shore-side activities nearby. Just a short walk across the street from the marina is the Gaylord Pacific Hotel, which offers a variety of restaurants and dining options for those looking to explore beyond the marina.
For those who enjoy exploring ashore, there are plenty of nearby attractions. Members may wish to visit the Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to an impressive collection of historic ships, including the famous Star of India. Closer to the marina, the Living Coast Discovery Center offers a fun and educational look at local coastal wildlife. The surrounding waterfront also features excellent paths for hiking, walking, and biking with scenic bay views.
The official event runs Friday through Sunday; however, members who wish to arrive early are welcome, as Tony and I plan to be on site as early as Thursday. Members may also plan to depart late on Monday, making this an extended weekend for those who wish to stay longer.
Tentative Schedule:
• Friday afternoon: Launch and sail, followed by dinner at the Galley Restaurant or dockside.
• Saturday: Sailing in the South Bay, followed by a BBQ potluck at the marina clubhouse in the evening.
• Sunday: Optional breakfast at the Galley Restaurant, morning sailing, and departures (or stay through Monday if extending your trip).
Slip Reservations and Marina Information:
Guest slip reservations are required and must be made through Dockspot, as Safe Harbor Bayfront no longer uses Dockwa.
Slip fee: $2.00 per foot, per night.
Marina insurance requirement: $500,000 liability coverage.
