Featured speaker: Chuck Haddix, "Bird: Charlie Parker on Record in Kansas City"
Chuck Haddix served as curator, Marr Sound Archives, UMKC University Libraries, from 1986-2025. He has been a producer for KCUR-FM, UMKC, from 1974-present, where he produces and hosts the Fish Fry, a twice-weekly radio program featuring blues, soul, R&B, jumpin’ jive and zydeco. He also has served as a lecturer at Kansas City Art Institute from 2010-present. Chuck has numerous publications and awards to his credit.
Bobby Watson is a multi-GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist, composer, bandleader, educator and producer, who trained formally at the University of Miami and then, from 1977-1981, earned his “doctorate” as musical director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. During his four-plus years with the legendary drummer, the saxophonist contributed to 14 Jazz Messengers recordings — more than anyone else in the group’s 35-year (1955-1990) storied history.
