About this Event
Chronicle of The Years of Fire traces the years leading up to the Algerian War of Independence from 1939 until 1954. It tells the story of brutal French colonial occupation which sought to erase a culture and a people, as well as the burgeoning revolutionary movement which would eventually prevail over it.
The war forged a shared Algerian identity rooted in anti-colonial struggle, language, and religion, uniting diverse groups against a common oppressor which has profoundly influenced the Palestinian liberation movement. It provides a powerful example of successful decolonisation against what seems insurmountable odds.
The film is a staggering epic, a fitting document depicting the heroic struggle of the Algerian people. Released in 1975, it is still the only African or Arab film to win the Palme D’or, the top prize at the Cannes film festival.
