The actual bayou was first called Bayou a la Mule. The Bayou Amulet was restored in 2004 to a Greek Revival style popular in the mid-1800’s. The homeowner’s exhibit a collection of antique French oyster plates, Christmas cookie jars, and Christmas garland draped over everything that will stand still.
Ragan House - 220 Rue Ragan Originally built in 1895, Ragan House was restored to its traditional bungalow style in 2015. Visitors are welcomed into the home with a rare eight-foot-wide dog trot entry. Ragan House features original hardwood floors, windows, and an enclosed back porch that now serves as beautiful kitchen.
The Roque House – entrance located at 760 Front St. Recently restored, The Roque House was built in 1803 by Yves Pacale, a freed man of color. The house is a remarkable example of the creole style of French architecture along Cane River. Constructed in typical French colonial fashion with hand-hewn cypress and a bousillage fill (a mixture of mud, Spanish moss and animal hair), the structure was topped with an oversize roof of durable shingles. The Roque House is among the oldest surviving examples of Creole architecture in Natchitoches Parish. The structure may be the only remaining circa 1790s French Creole post on sill house built by a freed man of color.
