Christmas Eve marks the end of the Advent season as we move from patient waiting to fullness of joy. Throughout this season, we have waited symbolically with all those in the Biblical story who waited for the first coming of Christ and we have learned the lessons God had for us there. We know that we are still waiting—with alert anticipation—for the second coming of our Lord in glory sometime in the future. And we watch for the “third coming” of Christ in the here and now—in the midst of our longings, our questions, and all that is still not yet right in our world. Like Mary, we are alert to the signs that it is time for new life to finally make it’s way into the world. The situation might be imperfect...we might not feel quite ready...there might be danger all around…but when Jesus decides to come, it is the fullness of time.
