Join us for a rare FULL BAND performance Chris Smither & The Motivators!Born in Miami during World War II, Chris Smither grew up in New Orleans, where he started playing music as a child. The son of a Tulane professor, he learned the basics from his uncle on his mother’s ukulele. Inspired by Lightnin’ Hopkins’ "Blues In My Bottle," he developed a distinctive guitar style.
In his early twenties, Smither moved to Boston, influenced by folk singer Eric von Schmidt. There, he formed lifelong friendships with musicians like Bonnie Raitt, who later recorded his songs “Love You Like A Man” and “I Feel the Same.” His unique guitar sound, influenced by Mississippi John Hurt and Lightnin’ Hopkins, emerged from these early experiences.
His 20th release, "All About the Bones" (2024), features new songs and covers, blending Smither’s guitar and vocals with David Goodrich’s instrumentation, Zak Trojano’s drumming, BettySoo’s harmonies, and Chris Cheek’s saxophone, creating a baroque yet austere sound in a rare full-band performance.
