ChopChop are a high energy artrock band known for their compelling live shows, with frontman Xelís de Toro mixing angular frantic movements with yelped vocals, and the band pulling in wildly eclectic influences to form a unique sound. They have been called the ‘funky fall’ and although they soak all kinds of sounds as musical sponges they have been often associated with New York post-punk and No Wave.
ChopChop's distinct and slightly outlandish character comes from its members’ different artistic and musical backgrounds: vocalist Xelís de Toro is a Galician writer and performance artist who yelps, jumps and grunts; cornet player Alistair Strachan brings from softly-played melodic lines to crashing riffs enhanced with electronics; drummer Ed Briggs is an accomplished cross-disciplinary artist, inventor and composer; and Eddie Haydn-Smith’s fluid bass-playing draws on his love of jazz, psych, dub and baroque.
PRESS QUOTES
“A fantastic life affirming noise… wildly original”
– Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6 Music
“CHOPCHOP’s music snakes round its orator like a slippery thing, cymbals replaced by the clatter of hubcaps on toms, cutlery-jammed guitars – there’s an itchy jazzy vibe to the melodics, fuelled by a fertile imagination full of bruised shapes and punkish angles"
– FREQ
“If Rip, Rig + Panic had had a Galician Dadaist poet for a lead singer, this is what they might have sounded like…”
– Ben Thompson, Resonance FM
