TITLE: CHILD MALTREATMENT SERIES-ADVANCING YOUR KNOWLEDGE: Basics of Investigating: Sexual Child Abuse Cases

SUMMARY:
Child sex abuse cases are often extremely difficult to investigative in part because of corroborating evidence and challenges with victims. The first purpose of a child abuse investigation is to ascertain the safety of the child and then to obtain the information necessary to resolve issues and to proceed criminally or civilly. An understanding of the dynamics of child abuse, the victim and the abuser will provide insight into the many facets of this type of crime.
At the end of this training, participants will:
· understand the prevalence of sexual child abuse.
· understand behavioral indicators for child sexual abuse.
· understand basic elements of the sexual child abuse investigation.
· understand Maryland required reporting laws of abuse.
PRESENTER: David A. Betz
David A. Betz is a twenty-five-year veteran of the Harford County, MD Sheriff’s Office and is the former director for the Harford County Child Advocacy Center. Dave served in many capacities during his career to include the investigation of child abuse cases from 1998 to 2011; Public Information Officer/Spokesperson; member of the Special Response Team, assignments within the Patrol Division and instructor for workplace violence prevention.
He also has served as a member of the National Children’s Alliance Board of Directors, an advisory board member of the Child Protection Center in Cedar Falls, IA, the Maryland Children’s Alliance, and the board of the Iowa Chapter of Child Protection Centers.
Dave is a Doctoral Candidate at Liberty University in Business Administration with a concentration in leadership. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Liberty University and a Master’s Degree in Management from Johns Hopkins University. He also holds certifications as a Certified Protection Professional and a Professional Certified Investigator from the American Society for Industrial Security.

Certificate of Training, Social Work CEUs and Academic Credits:
RVAAM selected curriculum has been approved for specific professions (e.g. social work, law enforcement, corrections, probation/parole) Upon completion of an online evaluation form, participants are welcome to request a Certificate of Training; Social Work Continuing Education Units (CEUs), and/or academic credits. All participants are eligible to receive a Certificate of Training (1 credit per training hour).
In order to receive a Certificate of Training, participants video cameras must remain on during all V-STEP Webinar trainings.
