Every Winter Solstice is National Homeless Memorial Day. It is the shortest day of the year, so the day with the least light. That symbolizes lives cut short by simply being homeless. These are the ones we know of who don't get funerals or memorial services, so we do this to not forget the ones who had the least among us. They are mothers, fathers, grandparents, young people, elders, sisters and brothers. They had family, neighbors and people who cared about them. They died on the streets without permanent shelter. We will read their names from our In Memoriam list for which I am the unofficial keeper, and other details to mark their passing. We often learn of more at this Memorial, and all are welcome to submit names and any details to me, at any time: [email protected]. Anyone who knew them is welcome to speak about them. There are many Chico advocate groups who save many more from dying in this way, and they are all welcome to speak about what they do as well, and of course many know those we lost. We will hold vigil candles, electronic ones, even though it will be in daylight, it will likely be raining. Please dress for it and bring umbrellas. We hold this Memorial no matter how miserable the weather, again as an homage to those who have to live in all weather without shelter. The public is most welcome to join us in this respectful annual Memorial Vigil. Prepare to be moved.
