About this Event

Chickenology: Explore Genetics to Breed the Best Brood

Teach life science in grades 6–12 by taking a closer look at chickens. This 2-day workshop for Ohio science teachers is tooled to Ohio Biology standards, so you leave ready for state testing and the science seal.

GrowNextGen teacher leaders will guide you through 20 ready-to-use lessons:

  • Grades 6–8: ancestry, inherited traits, natural selection, and artificial selection
  • Grades 9–12: Simpson's Diversity Index, Hardy-Weinberg, cladograms, biotechnology practices

The curriculum is layered with career videos, virtual field trips, movement songs, e-learning modules, games and simulations, and project-based engineering challenges.

Try it yourself during the workshop, then bring home $350 in classroom supplies, including prepared slides, a hygrometer/thermometer, foldscopes (student microscopes), and materials for the games and engineering challenges, plus 1.8 CEUs.

You'll also connect with industry experts over dinner and take a virtual tour of a local commercial operation, since 1 in 7 Ohio jobs run through agriculture.

Coming from out of town? Meals and hotel rooms are covered.

Note: this workshop does not include supplies for hatching chicks, and is not intended for elementary teachers.

"Chickenology is going to replace some stuff I've done in the past. It's the same topics, it's just better." —Erica Hitzhusen, Worthingway Middle School

Chickenology is presented by GrowNextGen and funded by the Ohio Poultry Association and the Ohio Soybean Council, in partnership with EducationProjects.org and OSU/4-H.

GrowNextGen connects students to real-world science and careers in modern agriculture through the generous support of the Ohio Soybean Council and Ohio soybean farmers.
