Cheyenne Mountain State Park Trail Love

MedWheel is partnering with Friends of Cheyenne Mountain State Park to give the Dixon and Mountain Loop trails some Trail Love. The Dixon Trail is the singletrack crux of a 2,000' climb from the CMSP main trailhead, then continues up Cheyenne Mountain as a hiking-only trail to the Mountain Loop. We'll be clearing downed trees and scrub oak to give wide-handlebar riders some elbow room, plus clearing the Mountain Loop in preparation for Friends of CMSP's biggest fundraiser of the year: the Cheyenne Mountain Run (5K to 25K).
We'll gather at 7:00 AM at the Park Maintenance Shop — take a left at Camper Services at the top of the park's main road. From there we'll drive to the top of the mountain and split into teams.
Two teams will clear the Mountain Loop, one going clockwise and one counterclockwise. Each team is one person on a chainsaw, one on a gas-powered W**d whacker, and one or two "swampers" with loppers, handsaws, and rakes for cleanup. The third team will head down Dixon, clearing a few trees and encroaching growth — same crew makeup. The Mountain Loop teams should finish by noon or 1:00 and drive back down. The Dixon team will get rescued at Pine Oaks Road, probably later in the afternoon.
Trail Agents also have the option to ride their mountain bikes to the bottom of Dixon and work up toward the top-down Dixon team.
Wear sturdy shoes, long pants, eye protection, and sunscreen. Bring work gloves, plenty of water, a lunch if you want one, and a waterproof jacket in case of rain.
And there will be ice cream in the Visitor Center after our work day!
