The town of Chester-Le-Street is steeped in history, taking its name from a Roman fort there called Congangis which sat on the main road between York and Hadrians Wall.
It was also the home of St Cuthbert’s body for over a century before it was moved to Durham Cathedral - the church that kept it, St Mary’s, still very much part of the modern town.
The building which is now the community centre was opened as the South Pelaw colliery Miner’s Welfare Hall in November 1929, where it became a place for miner’s to socialise from the nearby colliery. The colliery itself has 42 deaths linked to it, and the miner’s welfare hall was a common place to hold wakes.
Upon the closure of the colliery in 1964, it became a community centre. With paranormal activity reported by people over the years, it was investigated by Alan Robson live on Night Owls.
