Chasing the Bright Lights of Summer Nights: Fireflies

Join Conservation Nebraska and Dr. Ted Burk at Elmwood Park on Monday, July 13th at 8:30 pm to hear Ted's brief orientation presentation and then look for fireflies that will be out and about. We will look for fireflies doing their male mating flights and female response flashes, hoping to see several observable species in this area.

Dr. Ted Burk has conducted firefly studies at Elmwood Park in the past. Dr. Burk is a Professor of Biology at Creighton University. Dr. Burk earned his B.A. in Biology from the University of Kansas in 1974 and later studied at New College, University of Oxford. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Florida, he joined Creighton University's Biology Department in 1982 and became a professor in 1996. His research focuses on behavior and conservation biology, especially of insects. He has authored 30 papers and book chapters and co-authored Biology of Animal Behavior. He is also deeply involved in citizen science projects that engage the public in conservation research.
