About this Event

Charleston's Hoodoo Watch Night Service

Join us for an unforgettable in-person experience at Charleston's Hoodoo Watch Night Service to welcome in 2026 with healing and blessings! Dive into a spiritual night filled with old time traditions, spirituals, healing, prayer, and community connection as we "wait fah de hour" to celebrate the new year. This event is presented by the Charleston Hoodoo Society and First Hoodoo Church of Charleston.
What is Watch Night?
"On the night of December 31, 1862, enslaved and free African Americans gathered, many in secret, to ring in the new year and await news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. Just a few months earlier, on September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the executive order that declared enslaved people in the rebelling Confederate States legally free. However, the decree would not take effect until the clock struck midnight at the start of the new year. The occasion, known as Watch Night or “Freedom's Eve,” marks when African Americans across the country watched and waited for the news of freedom. Today, Watch Night is an annual New Year’s Eve tradition that includes the memory of slavery and freedom, reflections on faith, and celebration of community and strength." - ( The Historical Legacy of Watch Night | National Museum of African American History and Culture )
What is Hoodoo?
Hoodoo is a sacred African American spirituality born from the strength and brilliance of our enslaved ancestors. Created as a means of survival, healing, protection, and perseverance, Hoodoo carries the spiritual memory of Africa into the reality of descendants of enslaved Ancestors in this part of the diaspora (America). It draws on the medicinal and spiritual power of natural elements—herbs, roots, minerals—and embraces animism, conjure traditions, and deep ancestral reverence.

Despite harmful stereotypes, Hoodoo is profoundly God-centered. It is not anti-Christ, evil, nor demonic; these misconceptions stem from colonization, racism, and Hollywood distortion. For many, Hoodoo and Christianity were/are intertwined sources of comfort and liberation.

At its core, Hoodoo is African American culture, a way our people have always connected with God, our ancestors, and the spiritual world to endure oppression and preserve our identity. It stands as a testament to resilience, faith, and the unbroken spirit of a people who refused to let their divinity be erased.
