He was only 12 when civil war broke out between his father Charles I and Parliament, and fought on his father’s behalf throughout the war, commanding troops from the age of 14, before being forced into exile in 1646. Following the execution of Charles I he attempted to regain his throne, but was defeated, hid in an oak tree and escaped in disguise to France.
