King Charles II is one of Britain’s most colourful monarchs. He was only 12 when civil war broke out between his father Charles I and Parliament, and fought on his father’s behalf throughout the war, commanding troops from the age of 14, before being forced into exile in 1646. Following the execution of Charles I he attempted to regain his throne, but was defeated, hid in an oak tree and escaped in disguise to France.
After a decade of chaos under the rule of Parliament, Charles was restored and after years of austerity, the ‘Merrie Monarch’ was determined not just to restore stability, but to teach England to enjoy itself again, and he believed in leading by example! From horse racing to theatre, and astronomy to the introduction of coffee houses and newspapers, through plague, fire and a scandalous series of affairs, the reign of Charles saw an astonishing range of historic events and major developments in English society. Come and see King Charles brought to life again – but lock up your daughters!
Tickets are £14 and should be purchased in advance
