Oliver’s story below ⬇️
No parent should hear the words, "your child may have cancer" but these are the words we heard one Friday night back in may at Kettering General Hospital, our world felt like it had literally fallen apart around us, by the next evening we were heading to Nottingham Children's hospital and into the dark unknown, nothing, absolutely nothing could have of prepared us for what we were about to experience as we entered a specialist children's cancer ward, we wanted to turn around and take Oliver home, but this ward became our home for the next week, as tests and scans became the norm, surgery, a biopsy and an army of consultants, doctors and nurses doing everything they needed to do to understand what was wrong with our Oliver, then the long 3 week wait for the labs to confirm the diagnosis, that was a rare children's bone cancer, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, with around 50 cases a year found in the UK, and his weekly Chemotherapy journey started, that thankfully we could have at, a unit in Northampton, along with daily steroids we started our new way of life, we are now about to start his third cycle of Chemo and steroids, as his journey will be for at least another 6-12 months, he has now started a few hours a day at school but we live on the edge with infection risk and other normal risks such as chicken pox that would make Oliver very poorly, We visit a hospital at least once a week which is ongoing, Oliver sisters who are aged 12 & 15 are also affected by his condition and as his parents, every day is a different and sometimes difficult one, but we keep strong for our family and each other, Cancer is an awful thing and doesn't discriminate, but together we can help other families who who have to here those terrifying words and need support in those early days, which is why we have chosen to support Millies Smiles, a small charity, who's kindness made a world of difference to us, in time of need.
