Marlee Malmborg is the Operations Director and Co-Director of the Missouri River Bird Observatory (MRBO), where she oversees much of the organization’s day-to-day operations and helps coordinate MRBO’s education and outreach programs and events across Missouri. She holds a B.S. in Science from Missouri University of Science and Technology and previously spent seven years working with the U.S. Geological Survey on endangered pallid sturgeon conservation. In addition to her operations and education responsibilities, Marlee coordinates MRBO’s American Kestrel Nest Box Monitoring Project, working with landowners and volunteers to monitor nesting activity and contribute data to broader kestrel conservation efforts.
Program Description American Kestrel Nest Box Monitoring: What We’re Learning in Missouri
American Kestrels are familiar birds across Missouri, but populations have declined in many parts of North America, making local monitoring increasingly important. The Missouri River Bird Observatory’s American Kestrel Nest Box Monitoring Project is helping fill gaps in our understanding of kestrel nesting success, habitat use, and nest-site selection in Missouri.
This presentation will highlight MRBO’s growing kestrel nest box program, including how boxes are selected and monitored, what we have learned from several years of nesting data, and some of the challenges kestrels face during the breeding season. Marlee will share results from MRBO’s monitoring efforts, including nesting activity, eggs and young produced, nest success, and the variety of sites kestrels are using.
The presentation will also discuss how nest box monitoring contributes to larger-scale conservation efforts through partnerships with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s NestWatch program and the American Kestrel Partnership. Attendees will learn more about how community members, landowners, and bird enthusiasts can participate in kestrel conservation and help expand our knowledge of this charismatic Missouri raptor.
