Edge of the West: The Birds That Audubon Almost Missed
In the early to mid 1800s, when many North American birds were still being described to science, bird distribution on this continent was poorly understood. For years, no one recognized how abruptly the birdlife changed at the edge of the Great Plains. When John James Audubon passed through Missouri in 1843, on his one big trip west, he was just beginning to figure out some of these patterns. In this program based on a chapter from his recent book, The Birds That Audubon Missed, Kenn Kaufman will talk about that age of exploration, and will show how some discoveries from two centuries ago are still affecting our experience of birding today.
