About this Event

How do we create expressive portraits in the acrylic medium? It begins with understanding inspiration vs. reproduction. This three-day workshop is designed to change the way you view your reference, and the acrylic medium, helping you to convey on the canvas, emotionally impactful paintings.
Chantel will share tips and techniques learned from over thirty years of working in the acrylic medium. Her gentle teaching style will enrich the painting skills of beginners and advanced artists alike. She will demonstrate painting the portrait and figure with energy and vitality and discuss the key points to creating a work of art that is inspired, rather than copied, from reference material.
Specifically, students will learn about: essential materials and how to use them, what photographs make the best references for portrait painting, editing (what you leave out is just as important as what you keep in), color mixing tips, and how to recognize and use value patterns. Students will also learn the importance of edges when loosening up their painting. Chantel will discuss how these all work together in creating a strong composition. Students will work from their own photographs.
Chantel’s Supply List for FLPC – Acrylic
I work in a combination of both Heavy Body and Open Acrylic to achieve my favorite effects. However, for those who like their paint to dry slower (more like oils), I recommend working only in Open Acrylics for this workshop.
Heavy Body Acrylics/Golden Open Acrylics
titanium white (Liquitex)
N8 neutral gray (Golden)
transparent red iron oxide (Golden)
transparent burnt umber (Liquitex)
ultramarine blue (Liquitex)
cadmium yellow light (Liquitex)
cadmium orange (Golden)
alizarin crimson hue (Golden)
chromium green deep (Sennelier)
permanent green light (Sennelier)
green of nice (Charvin)
anise green (Charvin)
indian yellow hue (Golden)
manganese blue (Golden)
cadmium yellow medium (Golden)
Brushes
Silver Brush Grand Prix, Silver Silk 88, Bristlon, and Ruby Satin brushes - synthetic and natural white hog bristles extra-long filberts, flats, liners, rounds, and fans (various sizes including 2,4,6,8,10)
Rosemary ‘The Tisch’ bristle daggers
Masterson’s Sta-Wet Red Premier Palette (12x16) with sponge & Masterson’s Palette Paper is simply a must when working with Heavy Body fast drying acrylic. Without this system the paint will dry too quickly and be difficult to work with. The New Wave Easy View Palette works best for open acrylic only.
Materials and Tools
Masterson’s Sta-Wet Palette System 12x16”
New Wave Easy View Palette, Grey 12”x16”
Painting panels (I use Artefex Alcot Panel 513, extra-fine)
Thick white cotton rags/towel for wiping excess paint on
Paper towels - Blue Shop towels highly recommended
Water Container
palette knives
Photo References
Students will work from their own reference photos. However, to ensure that they will give the best painting experience, please email your photo choices to [email protected] before the workshop.
Optional Supplies (recommended because I will use)
Acrylic Inks – Liquitex/Sennelier
titanium white
cad red light hue
cerulean blue hue
sanguine
permanent green light
ink brayer
Catalyst silicone wedges and blades
Royal Sovereign colour shapers
***Important Notes about the above supplies***
It is best to avoid the hues of Cad Yellow Light and Cad Orange - but purchase the true color instead. N8 Neutral Grey is a very light grey used in place of white for mixing – this allows white to be saved and used to mix the lightest highlights.
