I remember back in ‘02 when I was in line for World Series tix @ PacBell Park. Bored out of my mind, standing next to a girl reading the Bay Guardian, I read over her shoulder the music add: “Chameleons @ The Great American Music Hall.”
I WAS PSYCHED!! I’d been listening/buying Chameleons import/vinyls from Rasputins & Amoeba since the late 80’s, only hoping the band would get back together & tour. At that time they were an enigma to me, a mysterious band from Manchester who’d stamped an amazing legacy but had come & gone like so many great bands from that era. But come to find out they’d been reunited for a couple years & had already been to SF in 2000!!! “Dammit,” I thought, “there’s no question, I’m there. This is one event I can’t miss,” because you never know when it’ll be the last chance you get. I drove across town. GAMH ticket office was open & I grabbed four for Oct 18th.
In addition to being the original/main lineup, they’d added a 5th member, Kwasi Asante, on percussion & vocals. They could’ve brought the band on stage w oxygen tanks riding wheelchairs, I would’ve been happy just to see them live & in-person but they were tight as nails. The show was amazing!!! Someone else thought the same & decided to produce a live DVD, “Ascension, Chameleons Live in SF.” I uploaded parts of that DVD to YouTube. Enjoy �
