“Of course what’s deepest down inside is boring; it’s actually the surface that’s interesting, even though it’s often deceptive.” - Richard Hell, I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean TrampChairs, Leaves and Trees is a new collection of paintings, drawings and collages from local artist Eric Sanchez. Much of the work has been created within the last two years, while other pieces from a few years prior are being shown for the first time. The title of the show is a direct invitation into the common visual themes in his work.
Chairs feature as both the lead and supporting role in various indoor, outdoor and cityscape scenes. Sometimes the chairs are just chairs, however, more often they take on new meaning and suggestion when they are juxtaposed with everyday items featured in unusual perspectives, sizes, colors and patterns. Other times the chairs are a canvas and become a vessel to use as a visual plane to enter into an Escher like universe.
Leaves is both literal and also means departure, as in an opportunity to leave the directness of a landscape and enter into a fun and curious world that may have been unanticipated. While Eric’s work may stray and return from each other in style, palette and subject, they manage to retain a consistent sense of melancholy and searching for what may lie ahead when we trust in our instincts and allow guided chances to steer us through the night.
Finally, Trees are an ever giving life force. Whether they are full or bare, they represent the durability of nature to withstand circumstances. Trees are an inspiration in how they are able to be in harmony with a fast changing world while they stay anchored, yet connected to the change that they are inevitably part of.
