Center for Ukrainian Church Studies Chair Lecture
17th Century Latinization? The Forgotten Witness of the Kyivan Church After Union with Rome
The Very Rev. Mark M. Morozowich, Director of the Center for Ukrainian Church Studies, will deliver this fall’s Chair Lecture.
The seventeenth-century Kyivan Church developed in the aftermath of the 1596 Union of Brest. This fulfillment of the wishes of the Council of Ferrara-Florence provoked various reactions and counter measures. The newly united church faced pressures of assimilation from their Catholic counterparts as well as suspicion from non-signatories to the Union. This lecture looks at how the early church was understanding what it means to be in union and still retain its own identity. This lecture will explore some concrete examples and elucidate the principles that guided their decisions, which can potentially be instructive for today.
The event will be livestreamed and recorded for those unable to attend in person.
