About this Event
Join the Fulton Human Rights Commission, the Celia Newsom Legacy Foundation, Celia Supporters and Descendants of Celia and Robert Newsom for a powerful evening of remembrance, reflection, and resolve.
This year marks the 170th anniversary of Celia’s execution—a young enslaved woman who defended herself against sexual violence and was condemned for asserting her humanity. 170 years later, her story continues to shape Missouri’s—and America’s—understanding of justice, dignity, and freedom.
The 2025 Celia Candlelight Vigil will gather descendants, civic leaders, and advocates at the Historic Callaway County Courthouse, where Celia was tried in 1855. The program will feature:
- A keynote address by Adriene Holder, Esq., Celia’s 3rd great-granddaughter and a nationally recognized civil rights attorney
- Reflections from Missouri lawmakers and community partners
- A live musical tribute, including Narissa Bond’s original song “Celia”
- A moving Candlelight Ceremony of Remembrance symbolizing justice and hope
Together, we will honor Celia’s courage, celebrate the justice secured in her name—Pardon, Celia Day, the Celia Memorial Highway, and Human Trafficking Awareness Week—and renew our shared commitment to end sexual violence and human trafficking.
