About this Event
Join us on Saturday 23rd November 2-3.30pm for a meditative experience, exploring the notion of ‘gestational waters’ through restful listening and shared rituals. Guided by artist Grace Browne, we’ll journey through underwater sounds and storytelling of the deep, reimagining the ancient mythology of the seven sisters of the Pleiades star cluster – known in Igbo as the Inyom Asaa, guardians of The Seven Seas and the first ‘mermaids’.
The workshop draws inspiration from Bodies of Water by Astrida Neimanis, a book currently housed in Market Gallery’s Resource Library, as well as the watery origins of Nsibidi. Nsibidi is a West African symbolic writing system said to have been taught by mermaids and emerged from the echoing depths of underwater realms.
The event is free but ticketed, please reserve your place. The session will take place in our space at 3 Ross Street, which is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible gender neutral toilet. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided. We have travel and childcare bursaries available, please get in touch on [email protected] to request them.
We particularly welcome people from the global majority to participate, though this event is open to all who wish to attend.

This event is a response to our Resource Library, a small lending library home to a growing collection of books on anti-racism and solidarity across global political movements. The library functions as an educational resource where learning and conversations can take place.
