ABOUT SUPERIOR WIND SYMPHONY
Led by Joel Neves, the Superior Wind Symphony is an auditioned ensemble of winds and percussion that performs the music of composers spanning five centuries, living and not, from all genders, ethnicities, and genres.
ABOUT CAMPUS CONCERT BAND
Led by Jana Meckler, Campus Concert Band plays a variety of traditional and contemporary concert band literature as well as popular works. It shares a concert with the Superior Wind Symphony on the stage of the Rozsa Center every year, and performs around the community at a variety of venues.
ABOUT JOEL NEVES
Joel Neves enjoys a dynamic and versatile career as an opera, ballet, and orchestra conductor and educator. A prizewinner in the American Prize in Conducting, Joel is Director of Orchestral Activities at Michigan Tech, where he conducts the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra.
Joel served as national President of the College Orchestra Directors Association (CODA). During his term of service, he made a special focus on repertoire for college orchestras, especially contemporary music and music by women composers. Joel received a Doctor of Musical Arts in orchestral, choral, and opera conducting from Arizona State University and bachelor's and master's degrees from Brigham Young University.
ABOUT JANA MECKLER
Jana Meckler is a band director/music educator (K-12 license) and jazz/neo soul/pop singer who also plays flute and piano in her own band the The Jana Meckler Group, and for the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra. After teaching in the schools for 11 years, Jana is now focusing on her performance career, as well as educational clinician work and teaching privately.
ABOUT MICHIGAN TECH MUSIC SERIES
The Michigan Tech Music Series unites students, faculty, and community members for a vibrant season of live music in the Keweenaw. Enjoy the commanding Keweenaw Symphony and experience Michigan Tech Jazz as it transforms the Rozsa and McArdle Theatre into Orchestra, stirring Michigan Tech Choirs, and inventive New Music events. Feel the dynamic energy of the Superior Wind Symphony, Campus Concert Band, and iconic Huskies Pep Band, intimate jazz clubs.
Part of the annual Rozsa Season, the Michigan Tech Art, Music, and Theatre Series are presented by the Visual and Performing Arts Department. Through these series, students from across campus, community members, and faculty create art that connects us to the world. With majors in audio production and technology, sound design, theatre and entertainment technology, and nine minors, the department fosters creativity, self-motivation, and the development of practical and artistic skills. Everyone is welcome, and there's something for everyone.
