This Mahuru Māori, join a reorua (bilingual) He Tohu experience and hīkoi around Pipitea to celebrate te reo Māori and the unique hītori (history) of Pipitea. Deepen your understanding about ingoa tūturu (original place names) and the wāhi where He Tohu currently sits.
A reorua | bilingual tour of He Tohu and Pipitea
Join us and embark on a haerenga (journey) together to connect to the ancestors and our shared past. The tour will begin at He Tohu — a permanent exhibition of three iconic constitutional taonga that shape Aotearoa New Zealand.
* 1835 He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni — Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand
* 1840 Te Tiriti o Waitangi — Treaty of Waitangi
* 1893 Women’s Suffrage Petition — Te Petihana Whakamana Pōti Wahine.
These taonga are significant because they shaped who we are as a nation and will shape what we become in the future.
"Ka mua, ka muri | Walking backwards into the future"
A hīkoi around Pipitea
After the He Tohu tour, join us on a half-hour bilingual hīkoi (walk) around key sites in Pipitea of cultural significance.
There are slight inclines in places, but we will be walking on the pavement for the tour. If the huarere (weather) is looking inclement, please bring warm clothing, a raincoat, or an umbrella. If the weather is too bad, we will postpone the event, so please register so that we can notify you about the cancellation.
Shared kai
During the kaupapa, knowledge, pātai (questions), and reflections will flow between us. At the end we’ll have kai timotimo (snacks). You are welcome to bring snacks to share.
This event is suitable for all ages. Please meet at our waka reception desk on the ground floor before the tour starts.
Nau mai, haere mai!

Celebrate te reo Māori
Reorua (bilingual) speaking kaimahi will host your taenga mai ki te whare, visit. Some will be kaimahi tangata whenua and some will be kaimahi Pākehā, Tauiwi rānei. Like us all, this mahi (work) is for us and our descendants — mō tātou, me ō tātou uri, haere ake nei.
Toi te kupu, toi te mana, toi te reo Māori! | Hold fast to the word, to the mana and to the Māori language!
