The scheme has been designed to provide those who suffered severe permanent

fault of their own, in a Troubles-related incident. The payments are primarily an
acknowledgement of the acute harm which they have suffered.

International Human Rights Lawyer
Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh KC on becoming a Human Rights Lawyer - inspired by Majella O’Hare
Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh KC is a senior Irish barrister based in Matrix Chambers in London, called to the Bars of Ireland, North and South, and of England and Wales. She specialises in international law, crime and human rights, appearing in domestic and international courts and tribunals.
Widely recognised as a leader in her field, much of her practice focuses on justice and accountability for victims of State violence and violations of fundamental rights, including victims of the Troubles in the North of Ireland, and on the protection of the rights to free speech and protest. Her clients have included the Bloody Sunday families, the Hooded Men, Conradh na Gaeilge intervening in the case of the Keane family, denied the right to have an Irish inscription on their mother’s grave, and the protesters who toppled the statue of the slaver Edward Colston in Bristol.
She recently acted for South Africa in its genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice, and for the State of Palestine in advisory proceedings before the Court.
She was named Barrister of the Year by the Irish Women Lawyers’ Association in 2025 for her dedication, leadership, and commitment to rule of law and defence of human rights.
