Celebrate the Seashell Speech Space

Join us on Sunday, June 7, 2026 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Ocean Beach in San Francisco to Celebrate the Seashell Speech Space!

Recently, the current administration lashed out at James Comey for posting a photo of a seashell message he came across while walking on the beach. Subsequently, the Justice Department secured an indictment against Comey for “threatening the president.” While many legal analysts believe the case has no merit, it once again raises questions about attempts to restrict free speech.

In light of this, the Golden Gate fREADom Writers are welcoming you to our summer campaign to ‘Celebrate the Seashell Speech Space!’. When you are at the beach or the lake (or river or mountains or wherever!) this summer, spell out your messages of resistance and hope in seashells, river rocks, sea glass, or whatever lovely natural items you find and tag ‘@goldengatefreadomwriters’ in your Instagram reels and posts with the hashtag #seashellspeechspace. You can also post on BlueSky and tag @ggfreadomwriters.bsky.social. The “official” campaign will run from June 1 to August 31, 2026. We will repost as many messages as we can and at the end of the campaign, we will have prizes for the best posts!

To kick off our summer of seashell speech, join us on Sunday, June 7, 2026 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Ocean Beach in San Francisco (Stairwell 4 at the north end of the beach, where Balboa ends) to write some messages in the sand, eat some donuts, learn more about the GGFW!
