WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It is also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day. We use the date of June 19, 1865, to mark when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom by Union soldiers, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, culture, and resilience for the African American community and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality. Juneteenth is observed in Fairbanks by people of all races, nationalities, and religions. It is recognized that honoring the experiences of others leads to significant improvements in our society.
