As part of Celebrate Indigenous History at The Henry Ford, guest speaker Rebecca Nagle will present “We’re Still Here: Fighting Indigenous Erasure in the Media,” followed by a book signing. This FREE event will take place in Anderson Theater at Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation.
While Native Americans are 2% of the U.S. population, they make up less than 1/10 of 1% of representation in film, television and media. Seventy-eight percent of Americans report knowing little to nothing about Natives, and 72% say they rarely or never encounter information about them. When Native stories are told, they are most often from a distant, romanticized past.
Living, breathing Indigenous people are erased from the news, pop culture and public discourse. This erasure forms the core of anti-Indigenous racism today. This lack of exposure creates a stubborn stereotype in Americans’ minds that Native Americans are less real and even less human. Journalist Rebecca Nagle breaks down the lack of accurate representation of Native Americans in the media, how that impacts Indigenous rights, and how ordinary people can push back.
This program is held in partnership with the Native American Law Students Association at the University of Michigan Law School.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Rebecca Nagle is an award-winning journalist and citizen of the Cherokee Nation. She is the author of “By The Fire We Carry: The Generations-Long Fight for Justice on Native Land” and the writer and host of the podcast “This Land.” Her writing on Native representation, federal Indian law, and tribal sovereignty has been featured in the Atlantic, the Washington Post, The Guardian, USA Today and more. Rebecca Nagle is the recipient of the Lukas Book Prize, the American Mosaic Journalism Prize, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, a finalist for the Chautauqua Prize, a Peabody Nominee and the Women’s Media Center’s Exceptional Journalism Award. Nagle lives in Tahlequah, OK.
