(We’re celebrating early because the Friends Book Sale is in mid-October)Diwali is a Hindu Festival of Lights, celebrated to honor Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu). On this day Rama returned to his kingdom after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. Diwali also has a special significance in Jainism. It marks the anniversary of Nirvana or liberation of Mahavira’s soul, the 24th Jain Tirthankara of present cosmic age and celebrated at the same time.
