Gettysburg Choral Society to Present Celebrate America Memorial Day Weekend ConcertsThe Gettysburg Choral Society, under the direction of John McKay, will present a pair of patriotic concerts entitled Celebrate America during Memorial Day weekend. The Gettysburg concert is an official Adams County America250 event.
The first concert will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover, PA. The second performance will be held on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of The United Lutheran Seminary, 61 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg, PA.
These concerts commemorate America’s 250th anniversary and will showcase beloved patriotic and sacred selections spanning from the Revolutionary War era to the present day. Featured repertoire will include William Billings’ “Chester,” Mack Wilberg’s arrangement of “God of Our Fathers,” Virgil Thomson’s setting of “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need,” James Erb’s beloved arrangement of “Shenandoah,” and Mark Hayes’ powerful setting of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The chorus will also perform one of its signature selections, Hayes’ “The Gettysburg Address.”
A highlight of the program will be a special recognition of United States veterans through a musical salute titled “A Tribute to the Armed Services” by Lloyd Larson. Veterans and active service members are especially encouraged to attend and be recognized for their service. Legendary bugler Jari Villanueva, widely recognized as the nation’s foremost authority on military bugle calls, will present several selections, including the moving performance of “Taps,” honoring those who, in Abraham Lincoln’s words, “gave the last full measure of devotion.”
The program will also feature additional choral works by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw, William Dawson, Joseph M. Martin, and Irving Berlin, along with featured instrumental selections for trumpet and piano, including Paul Baker’s “Fanfare for Freedom.”
The Gettysburg Choral Society, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization composed of auditioned singers dedicated to excellence in choral music performance and community enrichment through the arts.
Admission to both concerts is free and open to the public. Tax-deductible contributions are gratefully accepted to help offset concert expenses.
