We are excited to share this amazing opportunity! On Saturday, March 29 (9am-12pm / 1pm-4pm) & Sunday, March 30 (10am-1pm), join us for one-of-a-kind workshop to learn Cedar Basket Weaving with three traditional artists – Pat Dunn, Diana Dunn, and Donna McNeil. And join us over lunch on March 29 (12pm-1pm) to hear about the cedar weaving journey taken by Janine Bufi and Sia Aronica. This all will take place at the Kittitas County Historical Museum in historic downtown Ellensburg.**Workshop Details:
Over the weekend of March 29-30, come learn how to craft an item out of cedar bark with training by a traditional artist.
On Saturday, March 29, two sessions will be offered – 9am to 12pm, and 1pm to 4pm. On Sunday, March 30, only one session will be offered from 10am to 1pm.
During each timed session, individuals interested in learning how to craft cedar bark may purchase a kit and do so for one of the following –
• Pat Dunn: Learn how to make two items out of three possible items – a reindeer, a heart, or a cedar rose. Cost: $50
• Diana Dunn: Learn how to craft a small cedar basket necklace. Cost: $80
• Donna McNeil: Learn how to create and design your own cedar cell-phone holder (size custom to your phone). Cost: $80
The cost is directly payable in cash to each respective artist. Please note that some items (like those offered by Diana Dunn and Donna McNeil) may need more time. Seating is limited for each time period to 10 students per artist, and seating is available only on a first-come, first-serve basis. Anyone aged 12 years or under must be accompanied by parent or guardian.
**Presentation Details:
Janine Bufi and Sia Aronica will share “Our Cedar Journey” during a free presentation on Saturday, March 29, 12pm-1pm.
Janine and Sia had been selected as one of 16 pairs for the 2024 Heritage Arts Apprenticeship Program, hosted by the Center for Washington Cultural Traditions. As the program helps to preserve and sustain cultural traditions important to Washington’s communities (like traditional arts, crafts, and skills), Sia and Janine were mentored by Donna McNeil, a skilled master artist, in order to learn how to gather cedar tree materials and process them using traditional skills/techniques to create finished, usable items. Learn about their experiences as apprentices and what they have to share overall about helping to preserve and sustain the traditional skills of cedar bark weaving.
The event is free and open to the public.
Program Info: The Heritage Arts Apprenticeship Program is a very successful program which is now in its seventh year and has had over 130 participants. The program is part of the Center for Washington Cultural Traditions and co-sponsored by Humanities Washington and ArtsWA. The events are hosted by the Kittitas County Historical Museum and the Ellensburg School District Ichishkíin Sɨ́nwit ku Tiináwit Payúutmita (ESD Ichisḱin Language and Native American Culture Program). The event will take place at the Kittitas County Historical Museum, located at 114 E 3rd Ave in historic Downtown Ellensburg.
